Vietnam is one of the world’s leading suppliers of good quality pineapples.
Pineapple is widely grown in western provinces such as Tan Phuoc and Tien Giang; Tri Ton, An Giang, or in mountainous provinces like Dak Lak.
Vietnamese pineapples have very good quality. There are currently 3 main types of pineapples on the market: Cayenne, Queen and MD2
*Cayenne pineapple: considered a widely known pineapple variety in Vietnam, second only to Queen pineapple in popularity. They are grown throughout Vietnam, most notably in places such as Tam Diep (Ninh Binh), Quynh Luu (Nghe An), Dak Lak, Don Duong (Lam Dong) and Quang Nam.
Features of Cayenne pineapple include:
- The leaf edges do not have small spines, the eye sockets are shallow, and the bark is very thin.
- The fruit is large, cylindrical, on average a pineapple weighs 1 – 3kg.
- When unripe, the fruit skin is dark green and black, when ripe, the skin is orange-yellow
- The fruit’s flesh is light yellow, soft, and has a lot of juice but contains a lot of fiber and is quite sour if the fruit is not ripe.
- The biggest advantage of this pineapple variety is that it has a lot of water and does not burn the tongue. However, its resistance to pests is poor and its deliciousness is also inferior compared to other prominent pineapples such as Queen and MD2.
*Pineapple Queen
Queen pineapple, or queen pineapple, is considered the most popular pineapple variety in Vietnam. They are widely grown and sold throughout our country, from markets to supermarkets, from the North to the South because they are very suitable for the majority of consumers.
The most recognizable characteristics of Queen pineapple include:
- The fruit has many small spines, the leaves are purple-green, and the edges of the leaves have many small serrations.
- When ripe, the fruit is yellow and fragrant
- The average weight of the fruit ranges from 600 – 800 grams
- The fruit core is soft, the flesh is opaque and crispy yellow, and contains less water than the Cayenne pineapple.
- Depending on the cultivation location, the quality of Queen pineapples will vary. Normally, Queen pineapples in the dry season will be sweeter than in the rainy season.
- Queen’s resistance to pests and weather is also better than Cayenne.

**MD2 Honey Pineapple – A cross between Cayenne pineapple and Queen pineapple
MD2 honey pineapple is an extremely famous pineapple not only in Vietnam but also in the international market. Dubbed the best pineapple in Vietnam, MD2 honey pineapple originates from Hawaii and was imported from Costa Rica in 2006. With the goal of creating a pineapple with delicious taste and excellent quality, combining With careful breeding and care, researchers have combined the best characteristics of two popular pineapples, Cayenne pineapple and Queen pineapple, to create the MD2 honey pineapple variety. This type of pineapple is very popular around the world with consumption demand in Europe and Asia increasing every year.
Due to the difficulty of breeding, this pineapple variety is limited in cultivation in Vietnam, mainly in the North. In the South, in recent years, MD2 pineapples have also been grown in the provinces of Hau Giang, Lam Dong, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, and Tay Ninh.
With the perfect inheritance of the advantages from the two parent pineapple varieties Queen and Cayenne, MD2 honey pineapple possesses the following characteristics:
- The fruit is cylindrical, large, each pineapple has an average weight of 1.3 – 1.5 kg, shallow eyes, no thorns (inherited from the Cayenne pineapple variety).
- The skin is thin, when raw it is light green, when ripe the skin is bright yellow.
- The fruit’s flesh is bright yellow, has a characteristic aroma, and has a sweet, crunchy flavor (inherited from the Queen pineapple variety).
- MD2 pineapple has very good resistance, high flowering and fruiting rate, the time from planting to meeting flowering treatment standards ranges from 10 – 12 months. Another advantage of MD2 Honey Pineapple is that the pineapple ripens concentratedly and the harvest time is usually 15 – 20 days earlier than Cayenne pineapple varieties in our country. Combined with firm fruit flesh, less prone to bruising during transportation, creating favorable conditions for the growing, harvesting, transporting and exporting process.
In particular, this hybrid pineapple variety has overcome the weakness of causing tongue irritation of the Queen pineapple, this is a plus point that helps this pineapple variety conquer the hearts of many demanding domestic and international consumers.
Currently, Vietnamese pineapples have been exported to Korea, Japan, UAE and many other countries in the EU region.
